My 7 Year Transformation: From A Struggling Freelancer to Speaking to a Room Full of Aspiring Filmmakers

It’s crazy to think that just a few years ago I left my hometown in Mason, Ohio, with nothing but my car, a trunk full of clothes, and a camera.

Broke and with over $35k in debt, I moved to Orlando in pursuit of my dream as a filmmaker.

Back in 2016, I found myself working tirelessly as a videographer and editor intern for the Orlando Magic, clocking in over 80+ hours a week for a measly $7/hr. I was barely able to keep a roof over my head…every day was filled with fear and anxiety:

Could I afford rent this month?

How do I get new clients?

Fast forward to today, and I recently had the incredible opportunity to speak in front of 40+ people at Full Sail University. The topic? How to create and scale a successful personal brand as a content creator. It's humbling, and I'm truly grateful for the chance to share my story:

My journey from living in my car to making over $100K+ a year as a filmmaker.

The key to my success? Learning to automate my business, build/leverage a personal brand, and embrace discipline. I stopped investing time in things that didn’t serve me (partying). I started investing in my personal and business development. I hired a business coaches. I stopped moving with fear and started moving with confidence.

Here's a few lessons I’ll never forget that I would like to pass along to you:

• Motivation may get you going, but discipline keeps you growing (discipline is the path to freedom)

• No growth happens inside your comfort zone so go take risks (overwhelm = growth)

• Work smarter NOT harder (learn how prioritize, delegate, and automate tasks as well as the biz)

• Take action (procrastination and indecision is killing your growth, don’t be afraid to make mistakes)
